What is catchment management?
Catchment management is balancing the use and conservation of natural resources on a whole of catchment basis. Catchment management is achieved through the combined efforts of the community, government and non-government organisations working together towards common and sustainable aims to achieve this balance.
Role and responsibility
The prime responsibilities of Wimmera CMA are the health of land and water in our catchment region and promoting sustainable and productive land use practices. This is achieved through local programs that identify and address improvements in the region’s natural assets. This includes:
- Rehabilitating waterways & wetlands
- Improving native vegetation management
- Providing environmental education
- Develop land capability & resource mapping
- Working with volunteer and community groups, such as Waterwatch and Landcare
- Undertaking salinity research & development
- Facilitating floodplain management
- Promoting practices that improve soil health

Wimmera Regional Catchment Strategy
The Wimmera Regional Catchment Strategy is a blueprint for investment in environmental projects over a five year period. It provides a vision for the future landscape of the Wimmera based on good science and local commitment to a sustainable landscape improvement. The RCS details projects and objectives to enhance and conserve the following regional assets:
- Wetlands, streams and terminal lakes
- Groundwater
- Agricultural land
- Heritage sites
- Parks and reserves
- State forests
- Remnant vegetation
