Healthy Rivers & Streams

Why is it important to keep rivers and streams healthy?

Children Enjoying The RiverThe waterways of the Wimmera are the lifeblood of our region, with their health having a direct impact on not only the environment, but also the social and economic health of the communities surrounding them. These activities can include everything from picnics and camping trips, to fishing competitions and rowing regattas.  Without healthy waterways these activities’ viability and the enjoyment from them, may be significantly reduced.

Monitoring and recording health

The overall approach of Wimmera CMA to improving the health of the region's river and steams is defined within the icon Wimmera Waterway Health Strategy Summary (4.53 MB).

Wimmera CMA also undertakes a detailed, comprehensive monitoring program to provide information to maximise the effect of riparian works and to help to prioritise activities for future funding.

Specific information is collected including:

  • water quality;
  • numbers and variety of aquatic life;
  • level and variability of flows;
  • health of the stream side zone and the physical form of the river/ stream.

This data is correlated into an annual report called State of our Streams.

What are environmental water releases?

Environmental water releases are specific flow events that are either released from reservoirs or are deliberately not harvested from streams to help protect the health of the regulated streams of the Wimmera.

The aim of these releases is to attempt to replicate where possible, similar flow regimes to what would have naturally occurred.

The waterways benefit from these releases through improved water quantities and quality resulting in a more vibrant range of flora and fauna in the waterways.
