Trees of the Wimmera - June Winner

Jul 06, 2017
Autumn leavesAutumn Leaves - June's Trees of the
Wimmera, Eucalyptus erythrocory
in Edenhope

This month’s photo’s came from Annette Jones’ garden at Edenhope. While not your traditional English Autumn leaf display, none the less a very special and very Australian Autumn scene.

Eucalyptus erythrocory is commonly known as Red-capped Gum. It is a Mallee from Western Australia, native to north of Perth in the Dongara and Kalbarri region. Illyarrie is the Noongar peoples' name for the plant.

It makes quite a good specimen tree growing to a height of 3 to 8 metres. The Red Cap is noted for its big flowers which can be 5cm across or more. The flowers are bright yellow, covered by a bright red cap in bud. The stamens are arranged in 4 bundles and fruits are ribbed with a red top.
