NAIDOC week 2017

Jul 12, 2017
NAIDOC 2017 Our Languages Matter

Our Languages Matter - July 2-9 2017

This year the theme for NAIDOC week was 'Our Languages Matter.'

A lot of Aboriginal and Islanders history and culture has been lost due to traditions and customs no longer being able to continue.

There are many different indigenous cultures across Australia, each with their own stories and songlines.

'Songlines' are important to the Aboriginal communities to maintain connections and to continue traditions.

Celebrations in the Wimmera this year included:

Monday

  • an Official opening at Wimmera Uniting Care in Horsham
  • a culture walk at Dimboola starting at Dimboola Common, with Aboriginal elder Aunty Hazel McDonald talking about the area's history and stories about the olden days
  • a flag-raising ceremony in Dimboola
  • a traditional soup and damper lunch at Antwerp reserve with stories about the area, and a marquee with dancing and a smoking ceremony.

Tuesday

  • a cabaret craft at Barengi Gadjin Land Council in Horsham and a living well Indigenous women's weaving circle at Halls Gap
  • A morning tea and display of Aboriginal artwork at the Department of Health and Human Services in Horsham

Thursday

  • the Delkaia Aboriginal Best Start Awards at Federation University in Horsham
  • movie screenings from Black Screen at Federation University in Horsham

Friday

  • a plaque acknowledging Indigenous wall art was unveiled at Nexus in Horsham with afternoon tea
  • a youth disco at Nexus
