Do you remember your favourite childhood place in nature? Where was it? How did you find it? How did you feel when you were there?

Over the last few decades we have begun to move indoors.  There is less outdoor play and more screen play. 

A growing body of evidence suggests that, from backyards to streets, parks and gardens, from the beach to the bush, kids do better outside! (and we believe adults do too!)

Nature Play week is about getting outdoors and into nature.

Nature Play encourages kids and parents to see the natural environment as a place to enjoy, play, imagine, relax and explore.

Getting your kids involved in Nature Play doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming, it can be as simple as a visit to the local park where the kids can roam free. Nature Play Week is a great time to get started.

If you’re looking for something a bit more to do Parks Victoria are hosting a free event - Bush Detective at Brambuk the National Park and Cultural Centre in Halls Gap on Friday April 13 from 10 – 11:30am for children 5-15.  Bookings essential.  For more information and to book go to: http://natureplayweek.org.au/event/bush-detective/

Other ideas for something closer to home include:

  • Going to a public playground (why not organize a mess free playdate!)
  • Visiting the Horsham Botanical Gardens
  • Visiting Warracknabeal’s Flora and Fauna Park (free)
  • Going for a walk along the Wimmera River
  • Fishing in the Wimmera River, Green Lake, Taylors Lake, Wartook, Lake Lonsdale, Lake Fyans, or Lake Bellfield.
  • Going for a walk and look around at Pink Lake or Lake Hindmarsh
  • Bush walking in the Little Desert National Park, the Grampians or at Mount Arapiles
  • Bird watching in the garden or park
  • Teaching the kids about gardening
  • Having a picnic
  • or Why not take the family camping for a great weekend out!
