International Day for Biological Diversity 2018

May 22, 2018

Happy International Day for Biodiversity!

May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity, with this year’s theme "Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity".

International Day for Biological Diversity or Biodiversity is about the global conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use and the equitable sharing of its benefits.  Achieving these objectives will be integral to meet the goals for United Nations worldwide sustainable development.

Although Wimmera CMA has not been around for 25 years, we also are working towards improving biodiversity in the Wimmera.  Our Vision is for ‘a healthy Wimmera catchment where a resilient landscape supports a sustainable and profitable community.’

Wimmera CMA is celebrating by sharing and promoting some of the ways we are working to improve biodiversity.  These include:

  • environmental monitoring (surface water, groundwater, vegetation, salinity, and animal species)
  • advertising and promoting incentive programs and natural resource management funding and grants programs that encourages others to work towards environmental and biodiversity stewardship
  • running events and workshops about current environmental issues to build community capacity to work towards environmental and biodiversity stewardship
  • providing assistance in recovery after environmental events such as floods and fire
  • supporting Landcare groups and local Landcare facilitators to plan and implement a wide variety of environmental improvement actions
  • helping to protect water habitats through:
    • environmental water releases to help vegetation, animals, and water quality
    • providing advice and permits to conduct Works on waterways
    • restoring waterways to help stabilise erosion
  • developing strategic documents for natural resource management based on local knowledge and leading science
  • promoting sustainable and profitable farming practices in consideration with environmental impacts.
