NAIDOC Week 8-15 July 2018

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.  NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC week is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Because of her, we can!

This year’s theme is ‘Because of her, we can!’

As pillars of society, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels.

Sadly, Indigenous women’s role in the cultural, social and political survival has often been invisible, unsung or diminished.

So this year’s theme is to help recognise and celebrate women and what women have helped past generations achieve and for what they will do to for the future generations.

Wimmera CMA is celebrating NAIDOC week with the launch of Virtual River Yarns on Tuesday 10 July at the Horsham Town Hall.

But there are lots of celebrations being held in the Wimmera too.
