A lot goes into Landcare in the Wimmera

It’s that time again.  Every year, the first full week in September is the time for all Australians to come together and recognise the efforts of the over 100,000 volunteers who dedicate their valuable time to care for our treasured land, water, and native Aussie species.

Hundreds of Landcare groups across the country will be organising events and activities to participate in the annual celebration.

So let’s take a moment to appreciate what the Landcare volunteers have achieved in the Wimmera this last year.

Just in the last year, local Landcare groups in the Wimmera region have completed:

  • many volunteer assisted planting days/weekends
  • several planting events with school groups
  • planting around 20,000 plants
  • fauna and flora monitoring: monitoring previous tree planting sites and platypus monitoring.
  • installing nest boxes
  • producing educational brochures and guides
  • and presenting various fun and educational workshops including:
    • Birds, Bush and Beyond + Photography Class, Communication Workshops, Fungal Wonders, National Harmony Day, Plastic Free July afternoon tea, Sheep Breeding Objectives, Seed Collection Field Day, Singing Workshop, Trees for Mum, and teaching school classes about biodiversity.

And now it’s your turn.  Why don’t you get involved with Landcare and get your hands dirty!  It’s not only beneficial to the environment, it can actually provide many benefits to you too.  Landcare volunteering gets you out into the fresh air, provides therapeutic activities and playing in the dirt may actually help boost your immune system and improve your mood.  Read more about how soil can help boost your mood!

So find your local Landcare group and get involved.  Remember, it’s for your benefit too!
