Dunmunkle Creek Draft WAP

May 20, 2020

Wimmera Catchment Management Authority is asking the Dunmunkle Creek community to provide input into the draft waterway action plan for the creek. Consultants Water Technology developed the draft plan after two well-attended community meetings in February.

The study area of the new action plan is from the Wimmera River near Glenorchy to Lawler Road, Boolite.

Wimmera CMA Operational Delivery Manager Luke Austin said community input was critical to the success of the plan.

“This plan makes recommendations on how the threats to Dunmunkle Creek can be best managed to protect the values of the creek. It also includes longer-term priority management actions for the CMA and its partners,” Mr Austin said. “We are really keen for people living near the creek to review this draft plan and capture their thoughts on how to best manage this important waterway.”

Dunmunkle Creek is a distributary of the Wimmera River and is a highly modified and channelised system. It gets natural flows through a breakout from the Wimmera River north-west of Glenorchy during times of high flow. The creek flows through Rupanyup and continues north into the southern Mallee.

Waterway Action Plans aim to identify the existing condition of a waterway and guide appropriate management actions to maintain and improve its condition. Action plans document values, such as remnant patches of native vegetation, recreational opportunities and agricultural uses. They also document threats which could include bank erosion and weed infestations.
