Eagle-eyed residents will have a chance to hone their bird-watching and bird photography skills with a new Wimmera Mallee wetland project.

Renowned bird expert Jonathan Starks and professional photographer Jenny Stephens will lead a bird watching and photography session next week at Watchem Lake to launch a community monitoring program for north-east Wimmera and southern Mallee wetlands.

The April 11 launch starts at 5pm and includes a barbecue.

The Wimmera Catchment Management Authority project will monitor bird activity at wetlands which benefit from environmental water from the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline. Researchers will use community survey results to help track the condition of wetlands and their response to environmental water.

Wimmera CMA chief executive David Brennan said since the pipeline project was completed, wetlands in the north-east Wimmera had become vitally important for providing surface water in areas where channel-fed dams used to proliferate.

“The response from birds, frogs and plants to this regular allocation of environmental water has been significant,” Mr Brennan said. “As part of our ongoing research into environmental flows, we would really appreciate any extra information from community members about what they see when they visit these wetlands. This will help us greatly with long-term planning for environmental water.”
Wimmera CMA and Birchip and Watchem Landcare groups are hosting the event, supported by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder.
