In the years immediately after the 2010-11 and then the 2016 floods we have used water for the environment to prolong the initial burst of breeding from those floods. With a lack of rainfall after the flood years, our focus has shifted and ongoing dry conditions make it essential to continue more conservatively.
The Wimmera is an area that experiences regular boom and bust cycles and we manage environmental flows to alleviate the impact of those cycles. In response to nature’s current cycle we are using water for the environment to help plants and animals avoid the worst of the impacts of the bust that is
drought.
More information is in our Spring Water for the Environment update.
