10,000 trees planted this year
Habitat on private land
SERTBC habitat
In the Wimmera:
- 2723 hectares of private land is dedicated to their habitat, an increase of 275 hectares this year
- More than 50 nest boxes are installed at priority sites, 25 of these installed this year
Around 200 volunteers have planted trees, built nest boxes and taken part in the annual cockatoo count
- Five new landholders have accessed funding to make changes on their properties to protect and enhance habitat for the cockatoos – there is plenty of room for more so please get in touch!
- During the annual cockatoo count on May 4, Wimmera volunteers spent over 80 hours searching and travelled nearly 1000 kilometres to count 305 birds, including two large flocks.
These endangered cockatoos are one of 20 bird species targeted for recovery under the Australian Government's Threatened Species Strategy. Researchers say latest results indicate that the Wimmera population is remaining steady and that it is heartening to know it hasn’t decreased dramatically.
Wimmera CMA is proud to partner with Birdlife Australia, Greening Australia, Kowree Farm Tree Group and the local community to stabilise the trajectory of this iconic species with funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
