Platypus Survey Success!

2025 Platypus Surveys

The Wimmera’s only known platypus population is continuing to hold its own in the MacKenzie River.

One new juvenile female platypus was located just below Zumstein’s on 17 June, during monitoring completed by EnviroDNA. She has been affectionately named, Petra.

She is this year’s young, being born sometime in late 2024. She was 650g and in slightly above average condition, very few ticks and beautiful coat. eDNA samples were collected as part of this monitoring from 7 potential refuge pool sites and sent to lab for analysis, with results to be confirmed.
