Spring update, water for the environment

WIMMERA water for the environment

Rivers, creeks and wetlands are fundamental to the health and vitality of the region

From little things…

Building a new home for tiny, endangered fish has added a whole new element to environmental learning for one group of Horsham students.

Students from St Brigid’s College gained hands-on experience in natural resource management by preparing a wetland and releasing 50 Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon and 52 Olive Perchlet.

This wetland now provides a refuge for these fish that might one day help re-establish populations of the species across the Murray Darling Basin. The Wimmera is in the southern part of the basin.

The project is part of a dedicated focus to give young people an insight into career opportunities that nature provides through Wimmera CMA, Victorian Fisheries Authority, Murray Darling Basin Authority, Yarrilinks Landcare Network and Barengi Gadjin Land Council (BGLC)
