WIMMERA water for the environment update

The Wimmera River, its weir pools and the region’s lakes are the perfect family-friendly playground for swimming, boating, fishing and water-skiing as well as more sedate activities like nature walks, paddle sports and birdwatching.

Continuing natural flows from recent rainfall have assisted water-for-environment releases in supporting the health and accessibility of these waterways for the communities, plants and animals that rely upon them.

The Wimmera River system, particularly its weir pools, also contributes significantly to the regional economy.

A 2023–24 study estimated its economic value at $6.77 million – investing in and protecting natural assets delivers benefits for everyone!

How to look after our valuable waterways over summer

  • Respect signs and local rules around swimming, boating and fishing.
  • Take all your rubbish with you when you leave; bin services might be limited at some sites so plan to carry waste out.
  • Keep pets under control near bird and wildlife habitat areas.

SUMMER FLOWS

We’re working hard to keep our rivers and wetlands healthy over summer. Here’s what’s happening:
Wimmera River

Flows from Taylors Lake will commence 9–17 December and again 6–13 January 2026 to maintain habitat and water quality.

Upper MacKenzie River & Burnt Creek

A short flow from Wartook Reservoir will run 9–15 December to replenish drought refuges in lower Burnt Creek. Another short flow will occur 6–8 January 2026 to support refuges in Upper Burnt Creek.

Wetlands

Watering at seven wetlands via the Wimmera Mallee pipeline continues until mid-December to top up levels and minimise summer water loss.

These flows are vital for sustaining wildlife and ecosystems during the warmer months. Thank you for supporting healthy Wimmera waterways!
